If the EPUB has no fixed print pagination, the tool starts with an estimated page count and lets you replace it with the page total shown by your own reader.

Progress in context

How the progress estimate works

The Reading Companion provides honest estimates of how long it will take to read a book, based on median reading speed. It also shows the number of text sections, giving you a sense of the book's structure.

Use the length categories—quick, steady, immersive, marathon—to plan your reading. For example, a quick read might take under an hour, while a marathon could take several hours.

Reading Time Estimates

Estimates are based on average reading speed. For instance, 'The Handsome Brandons' is 99,177 words, estimated at 432 minutes, so plan accordingly.

Text Sections

The number of sections can indicate chapter breaks or parts. 'A crown of straw' has 29 sections, while 'Paul Harley's dream' has only 2.

Length Categories

The collection includes 15 quick reads, 24 steady, 33 immersive, and 27 marathon books. Choose based on your available time.

Reading Tracker

Planning Steady Progress with Page Goals

The Reading Tracker helps you turn a chosen book into a manageable reading plan. It records your progress in pages, not in minutes or sections. You set a current page, a total page count, and a daily page goal, and the tracker estimates how many days remain. No account is needed; your history stays in your browser's local storage.

Setting Your Page Total

For books without a fixed page count in the catalog, the tracker estimates the total pages by dividing the word count by 250 words per page. For "Within the Tides: Tales — Background and Themes" (id 235), which has about 65,692 words, that gives an initial estimate of roughly 263 pages. You can replace this with the page count from your own reading app or edition if it differs.

The default daily goal is 20 pages, but you can adjust it to fit your schedule. A lower goal like 10 pages might suit a busy week, while 30 pages could be a weekend push. The tracker simply multiplies your daily goal by the number of pages left to estimate finish days.

Estimating Remaining Time and Finish Date

The tracker estimates remaining reading time proportionally. If you have read half of the pages, you have roughly half of the estimated minutes left. For "Within the Tides," the catalog estimates 286 minutes total, so after reading half you would have about 143 minutes remaining.

The finish date is calculated as the ceiling of remaining pages divided by your daily page goal. If you have 200 pages left and read 20 pages a day, you will finish in 10 days. The tracker does not count sections or minutes as progress; only pages matter.

Using the Tracker with a Real Book

Suppose you start "Within the Tides: Tales" on page 1 with a total of 263 pages and a goal of 20 pages per day. The tracker would estimate about 14 days to finish. If you read 25 pages a day, that drops to roughly 11 days.

The tracker is a planning tool, not a pressure device. You can update your current page as you go, and the estimates will adjust. It is especially useful for longer titles where a page goal keeps you on a steady path without requiring you to think about minutes or chapters.

Because progress is stored locally, you can close the browser and return later without losing your place. That makes it easy to maintain a long-term reading habit across multiple sessions.
